The
village of New Vienna is governed by a
mayor
and a
village
council.
You can send them an email from their contact page if you have questions
about our village, or if you would like to make suggestions. They will
reply as soon as they can.
Our village mayor is Keith Collins. He is the chief executive and is
in charge of the village. He also serves as president of the council and is in
charge of the village council meetings. Mayor Towner only votes when there is
a tie between the six council members. The Village Council members are
village residents elected by the voters of the village. The Village Council
decides on the rules which run our village. They make sure bills are
paid and our tax money is spent wisely. Some of the rules they use come from a
state rule book called the Ohio Revised Code. Other rules which are
unique to our village are made by the council. These are called resolutions or
ordinances.
All Council positions have the same powers. Council member Tracy Rappach
is the current Village President Pro Tempore (which means temporary). He
serves in this position as deputy Mayor and operates as President of the
Council when the mayor is absent. Every January the village council votes a
member to the President Pro Tempore position and they retain that position for
1 year.
Council cannot vote on issues unless there is a quorum present, which means
a majority. For example--if there are 5 council members, at least 3 must be
present in order to vote. All laws adopted by Council for the village must
have a specific amount number of members present.
The most important
thing kids can do for our village is to GET INVOLVED. Obey the rules set
by council, and try to help the village in any way you can. Maybe you
can organize a clean up crew for our roads and sidewalks, help an older person
with their yard work, volunteer for a parade or festival committee, encourage
people to keep their yards and houses neat and clean, plant flowers in the
spring around the gazebo, encourage your parents to vote on important
issues. The possibilities are endless. Kids can make a difference!
